I’ll be honest and admit that I didn’t know much about the
life and career of the late singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and activist,
the one and only Nina Simone – born as Eunice Kathleen Waymon (1933-2003). Over
the years, I had heard Simone's name mentioned a few times, but never made an effort to learn more about her life. But, something
about seeing the trailer a month ago for the upcoming authorized documentary that
would be featured on Netflix titled What Happened, Miss Simone? was
intriguing, so I put it on my “to do” list to watch.
I decided to watch the documentary beginning late last night until it ended today around 12:15 a.m. although I should have been in bed for the night. This documentary was deep, thought-provoking, entertaining, and heart wrenching. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and learned a lot about this gifted woman.
Simone was a brilliant creative genius with a soulful and
unique voice. She was also passionate about social issues, yet vulnerable at
times. Although Simone was very successful, it didn’t come without a price. In addition, Simone struggled with her own demons, heartache
and financial struggles. However, through all of her ups and downs, she knew without
a doubt that she was a gifted pianist, songwriter and singer, and the world is a
better place having been blessed with her music.
Simone’s only child, Lisa Simone Kelly, a singer and actress
with the stage name of “Simone,” should pat herself on the back as the
executive director of this powerful and raw documentary about her mother.
I highly recommend this documentary!
